Google is no longer just an internet tool! For the general public, Google only provides tools and technology to browse the internet. A giant on the net certainly, but just a search engine. For people who use the internet every day professionally, Google is also equipped with a multitude of tools such as Gmail, Analytics, Drive, Adwords … Everyone uses Google, sometimes without really paying attention. But if we take a closer look at this society, we will see that its strategy for the future will take steps that even today we still find it difficult to understand and accept …
What relationship between Google and neuroscience would you tell me? A standard. Yes, we are still trying to understand how the brain works and through a number of programs, notably in the United States, how the synapses that connect our neurons are organized. It is estimated that this understanding requires enormous power, which will be reached around 2020-2030 according to INTEL. But Google has gotten ahead …
The century of neuro-revolution
We are in the 21st century, the century of neuro-business and Google is the world leader. Yes, it is no longer IT but cognitics (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitique), brain science, which will take precedence. The challenge is to know how to read the brain and understand it: help to store and orient, in particular but not only. We are at the beginning of artificial intelligence. Google leaders want to transfer our brains to machines, this is called transhumanism (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transhumanism).
We are going to have to take an interest in neurology and brain intelligence. We will have to migrate to neuro-hacking (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neurohacking).
A technological shock is underway, Moore’s law (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loi_de_Moore) being only a first step towards the future. The NBICs are controlled by google. He entered nanotechnology with Calico, the “California Life Compagny” (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calico). Data management and big data are the jobs of the future. The automation of intellectual trades (e.g. an algorithm chooses a candidate better than a human resources manager) is going to be formidable and risks making many trades disappear. The machine will do better than humans for less.
What will change exactly? How is Google moving towards the neuro-revolution?
This is just the start for Google, 8 steps are underway:
1. Orientation :
Everyone knows this first step. Google provides us with the necessary tools to guide us, both in the real world and on the web (through google search, google map, google earth). The company has bought satellites and this is the next step to get a “live” view of the Earth, instead of just looking at a map taken in pictures two years ago.
2. Memory :
We store information, both in Google Drive, in Gmail, and in Picasa. We have an “alternate memory” online and this is just the beginning. All of this stored information will be used later to build our virtual memory.
3. Augmented reality :
It is already there too, thanks to “Google Glass”. We are directly touching the brain here, because the information is sent directly to the retina, yet the retinal cells are neurons. Their arrival in England is imminent.
There is also under preparation, “lenses for diabetics”. In fact, this summer 2014, the pharmaceutical group Novartis and Google joined forces to develop “smart” contact lenses capable of measuring the blood sugar level of people with diabetes. We’re in the prototype stage, but they’re coming soon.
4. Artificial intelligence :
There is a belief shared by all leaders: transhumanism. This poses problems, ethical in particular, and it will require careful reflection on the subject. Google has created a special committee to reflect on its AI ethics. Should they be left alone to ask themselves the questions or should the governments of the countries of the world also be able to decide on this subject? Should civil rights be given to an RN? Should we revive it? Listen to it? To be emphatic? Consider it our equal? Preserve our humanity? There are a lot of major bio-issues that will have to be tackled from a political angle by the countries of the planet.
5. Robotics :
Google bought the 8 most powerful robotics companies in 1 month “in secret” in 2013 (in front of everyone, without warning anyone).
– December 2, 2013 Schaft.inc Humanoid robot, JPN Google X
– December 3, 2013 Industrial Perception, Robot, USA Google X
– December 4, 2013 Redwood Robotics, Robot USA Google X
– December 5, 2013 Meka Robotics, Robot USA Google X
– December 6, 2013 Holomni , Robot USA Google X
– December 7, 2013 Bot & Dolly, Robot USA Google X
– December 8, 2013 Autofuss, Robot USA Google X
– December 13, 2013 Boston Dynamics, Robotics USA Google X
Google won all the top places in both Android and humanid robot contests. You should know that a good part of their current robots are sold to the US Army, so they are very often military robots (robotic soldiers). Not to mention “The Google Car”, a robot that is constantly improving and capable of recognizing and analyzing a lot of information on the road. The list is long and it has not stopped moving, Google bought Deepmind early 2014 (an artificial intelligence company).
6. Biotechnology :
This is about being able to strengthen, repair the body and the brain to give birth to a brain 2.0. The selection of embryos, neurogenetics, neuroprostheses, everything that has to do with physical and / or genetic improvement of the individual. You should know that the company ” 23andme (Google affiliate, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/23andMe) has been given a monopoly on the selection of embryos over genetics (the idea is to make babies more beautiful and smarter).
In terms of prosthesis, we also talk about intracerebral implants: fusion between biological and artificial intelligence. Towards a google who knows us better than our spouse? Hybrid thinking, from 2035? Intracerebral implants to connect faster? There have already been tests to manufacture the brain tip via stem cells, which have worked.
7. Roll back death :
Google wants to ensure a longer lifespan for the brain and therefore increase life expectancy in the 21st century, so in our century, by 20 years by 2035.
A fight against death has started. If the brain is still ok, it will also need a vehicle for survival. Google wants to quickly increase our life expectancy, solve the problem of death: enough to upset all of humanity. Google created Calico which we just talked about and it’s good for reversing death. Do we prefer to live 90 years by remaining humans 1.0 or do we want to transform to live 200 years?
8. Ensure eternal awareness :
We get to the main goal of any transhumanist:
– ensure the immortality of the soul by transferring it to integrated circuits.
– Back-up the brain in the event of a problem (still conscious after an accident)
What issues await us?
The google project therefore goes far beyond what the visible part of the iceberg shows today. Two camps will face each other in the coming years: the Bio-conservatives and the Transhumanists?
Who will refuse to live longer and / or increase their brain capacity? How much will it cost? Will everyone have the same “chances” to access this technology?
Political and ethical questions will arise, not without ideological and philosophical conflicts. What limits will we set? The ongoing “intelligence” world war, this which foreshadows neuro-selection and neuro-dictatorship. We will have to ensure neurological democracy which will become the first human right: free will, the security of our brain. A danger to humanity by wanting to do the right thing?
We have lagged behind our DNA data (predisposition to diseases, better adapt treatments). Later, in the event of anomalies, we will modify fragments of our DNA. What will we do with this power over our biological destiny?
The other giants do not remain inactive, in particular:
– Facebook and the Occulus Rift has also taken a step towards this dimension.
– Apple He also entered the health field, where he has great ambitions.
