According to the second LGBTQ + World Travel Report from the World Tourism Organization (OMT) and the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA), the LGBTQ + community is among the most frequent vacationers.
And, when they travel, their consumption habits are often above average. Add to that the social and legal changes made to the rights of LGBTQ + people in many countries around the world. It is therefore not surprising to see an increase in the number of travel products designed specifically for this demographic group.
Knowing the social and legal situation of a country before traveling is an additional step taken by most members of the LGBTQ + community. The security offered by travel agencies such as VACAYA or Out Asia, thanks to their expertise and tailor-made tours, offers peace of mind and access to travel friends with similar ideals. Whether it is a group trip or a solo hiking adventure, these dedicated agencies recognize the specific travel knowledge and needs for this community and offer them tailor-made solutions.
And it’s not just tour operators that are getting into these full packages. American author, composer and performer Keisha launched the Kesha cruise: a “weird and wonderful rainbow” cruise for queers and their cronies. On the program: glitter, glamor, a secure environment … and total freedom of expression. In a world where homosexuality still remains illegal and where transphobic crimes still exist (at an alarming rate), the promotion by such a prominent pop figure is a true declaration of total acceptance.
Tourist offices are also seeing the positive impact that LGBTQ + tourism can have on their economy. The ‘Ireland says YES to love’ campaign was launched on the eve of the historic referendum for same-sex marriage, encouraging LGBTQ + couples to visit and celebrate their love. And, last year, one of the most popular places in the world to say ‘yes’ launched its LGBTQ + inclusive campaign, showing an image of Las Vegas that goes far beyond the bride and groom… and Elvis impersonators.
Photography is ubiquitous in the travel industry – it is imperative to use – beautiful images of sunny beaches and vibrant urban environments to attract attention. The same is true for LGBTQ + tourism and maybe even more…
