Why is the business card needed?

Theoretically, it would seem that this small cardboard box is redundant nowadays – after all, data can be quickly saved on your smartphone and after trouble. It is worth remembering, however, that the business card performs both strictly informational and advertising functions. It has the power to attract new customers, but it can also deter them if the design of the business card is messy. This is certainly a necessary business tool, and often underestimated and even neglected. It should also be immediately emphasized that a properly designed business card is not only useful for owners of large companies. If you are a plumber, electrician or even run an online store, then you should also think about a professional business card.

You may wonder what a business card is needed for when you have a group of regular customers. The explanation for this turns out to be very simple.

  • It is worth expanding the circle of customers

No one can guarantee that even the most loyal customer will not leave the competition. A serious businessman or service provider always thinks about the future and tries to prevent a situation when orders are suddenly missing, or nobody orders the goods or services. Are you involved in the renovation of apartments? Hand your clients a business card – let them see that you take them seriously. Certainly, more willingly advertise your services to friends. What’s more, you can leave your business cards in industry stores, e.g. with construction products, bathroom fittings and ceramic tiles. It is also a good idea to leave your business cards in real estate offices and at the developers.

  • Present yourself well as a professional

People are increasingly paying attention to quality and are even willing to pay more, but with a guarantee of a high level of service. An entrepreneur or service provider who ensures a uniform and fully professional image has a much greater chance of reaching the customer. A website, logo and just a business card are the basis for the creation of a serious businessman, and it doesn’t matter that you only run a sole proprietorship. A business card is an effective way to make the first contact, but also to make it again. It clearly informs who you are and what you do.

  • It is better to make invoicing easier

Surely you often take an invoice to deduct certain amounts from tax. Dictating the name or company name is quite troublesome and sometimes ends with errors on the invoice. In such a situation it is much easier to hand a business card to avoid time-consuming invoice corrections and, in addition, to speed up the entire procedure.

How to design a business card? Don’t act alone!

Designing a business card that will be fully professional, transparent, with well-chosen colours and graphic effects is not as easy to do as you think. I think each of us happened to deal with not very legible business cards or those that contained a lot of unnecessary information. Be on the quantity and colour mismatch you could get dizzy. That is why the task of designing a business card should be entrusted to an experienced graphic designer. It is worth remembering that an unsightly business card is an identical anti-advertisement as its absence, so it’s better not to experiment. Even the best graphics program will not help you when you do not know which aspects to pay special attention to or you do not have manual skills.

It is not only the choice of the right material from which the business card will be made but also the size of the form, font type, colours and even the printing method.

How to design a business card ideally suited to your needs?

The design of a business card depends on several aspects to which attention should be paid. First, the industry in which you operate is important, but also your personality and how you want to be perceived. If you are an extremely creative person, you have activities related to art, photography or design, then you can easily afford less conventional business cards – with interesting graphics elements or even in an unusual shape. It will also be interesting to see a plastic business card for the manufacturer or distributor of products of this type of materials, a business card with a graphic motif for a hairdresser or a fragrant business card if you have a business-related to fragrances or perfumes.

You can’t afford such extravagances when the VIP sector remains your contractors and clients. In this situation, the business card is basically strictly informational, not advertising. Her look should be classic and made of the best quality materials. You will also need to be moderate when choosing colours or decorative elements. The business card should be a personal business card.

In turn, for owners of manufacturing and service companies who care about presenting their company, it is recommended to use business cards of more advertising nature. Such a business card may contain personal data, but also company data with NIP (tax identification number) and logo, and even well-thought-out graphic elements. It is basically a standard option, which is the most often chosen.

How to design a business card – basic issues

Before we look at the details in detail, there are a few things to note.

What should a business card be like?

  • Visually attractive

In other words – a business card must attract attention, but with its coherent vision, a reference to the company’s visual identity system, an interesting and nice form. The key is the colours and graphic elements.

  • Original

A good idea is key. Duplication of business cards of suspects in direct competition is excluded. It is better to stand out through a creative look at the business card design. Your business card is to make you stand out from the crowd!

  • Clear

Each business card must be legible. Therefore, you should think carefully not only about the colours, but also the resource of the information contained. If customers have trouble finding a phone number or company name on a business card, it is a sign that the business card design requires a new development. What is clearly visible is also better remembered. The transparent design encourages contact.

  • Current

Do you change your phone number or business address? You must change your business card. Business cards crossed out are terrible, and they are not good at showing our professionalism. Even worse, when you give someone a business card and forget to add that the phone number stored on it is no longer valid. It’s just business suicide.

How to design a business card in 5 steps?

You probably think so – there are so many free graphics programs, so what a problem to create a business card design, print it and after trouble. Ah, these shortcuts, which often turn out to be more twisting than the marked trail. Many people already thought so and later astonishment that the business card does not look professional. If you want to be proud of your business card and not blush when handing it to your client, we invite you to us!

See how many aspects you need to pay attention to when creating an elegant business card.

Step 1 – the right size and shape of the business card

In principle, the first issue that needs to be determined is the dimensions of the business card. In our country, the standard is 90 × 50 mm, so the best option will be to use this dimension. This business card will also work if you do business with clients from Russia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia or Belarus. Perfectly suits the business cardholder.

If your customers are from Western Europe, the USA or Canada, then the better option is the dimension typical for those standards, i.e. 85 × 55 mm. In this situation, it is best to have two sets of business cards – one for the domestic market and the other for foreign contractors. You can also bet on one dimension and then it is safest to accept the European one, which is somehow the equivalent of a credit card and easily fits in the wallet compartment.

It is very important to remember the so-called bleeds, i.e. the intervals from the edge of the business card. Most often it will be 5 mm on each side, but this issue should be agreed with the graphic designer. Errors during margin preparation often result in some details included in the design being cut off.

Remember that business cards in standard sizes will not only fit in a case or wallet but also are cheaper.

Of course, you can choose a slightly different shape – the traditional rectangle will look interesting, but with rounded angles. In turn, focusing on a more original shape, e.g. resembling a company logo, can sometimes be a nuisance to customers. A complicated pattern can bend and break more easily, although it looks great. Can you imagine a cake-maker confectioner?

In the construction industry, business cards folded along the long or short edges are more and more often used.

Step 2 – business card material

The most economical option is to print on paper weighing over 350 g (e.g. chalk paper). It is important not to opt for lower basis weight unless you are not bothered by the fact that the business card will break into the hands of the customer and destroy it very quickly (but this approach is obviously pointless).

The paper can have a different texture – they are available smooth and rough, matte and glossy, so you need to decide on a variant. It’s good to ask for paper samples to choose what suits you best. A logo or monogram should also be embossed.

Consider refining to increase the strength of your business cards. However, you must remember that foiling or varnishing increases costs. A business card coated with matt foil certainly looks great, giving it a specific elegance and neatness.

Another option is to combine matte foil and selective varnish. As a result, the business card will be matte, but with shiny elements. Also, matte soft-touch foil looks nice. Proponents of very modern design should consider very hard, layered multiplot business cards with a coloured stripe on the edge.

Business cards made of plastic, wood or metal? Why not, if your industry is associated with the material. Plastic can be in matt, transparent or frosted version, also in different colour versions. It will be a little more expensive but interesting.

If you do not must look at the costs or need a VIP business card, then an extremely elegant and exclusive option is a letterpress business card with inscriptions embossed on thick cotton material. The disadvantage of this solution is the ease of soiling and not too long durability, but this is not the point, but to make an impression.

Step 3 – colours, style and font

Do you know the most common mistake when designing business cards, yourself? The recombining, because there are so many great colours and font types that it’s difficult to decide on 2-3. Effect? The business card is hard to read, sometimes dappled. What’s more, the colours affect both the printing technique and its cost. Some colours and fonts do not look good in a small space. These are details that are not a problem for an experienced graphic designer, but for an amateur.

The basic principle when designing business cards is DIMENSION. Instead of many colours, gradients and shades work. In principle, 3 colours max. It is important that the colours and style of the business card are consistent with the website and the industry in which you operate. If the website is minimalistic, then the design of the business card must take this fact into account. It is necessary to maintain appropriate contrasts between the background and the text so that you can read what is written without any problems. People with poor eyesight may have trouble reading light letters on a dark background, so it’s best if the background is light and the text is dark.

Do you want to stand out? Then maybe opt for a vertical business card.

Elegant serif typefaces are perfect for classic business cards and family businesses. In turn, sans serifs look great on the showcases of modern brands. The text should be the right size. They look equally bad too small or too big. Text placement and free space are also important. The graphic designer will also choose matching fonts.

Step 4 – content

In the case of the amount of information placed on a business card, it is also recommended to moderate the form of the visiting card to remain legible and transparent. Do you need a personal business card? All you need is your name and contact details – phone number, email, or address. Sometimes an academic title is added.

For a business card, a company logo, owner’s name, business type, contact details (including website address) are necessary. If the business card should also contain NIP and REGON, then it is better to consider a two-sided option. The back area is also great for presenting a map.

Graphic elements or photos attract attention, but you need to carefully consider their arrangement and of course the choice.

Step 5 – preparation for printing

If business cards are to be of high quality, then a minimum resolution of at least 300 DPI is necessary, and fonts should be embedded in the file. Bleed is also important. Again, everything is broken into details.

Digital printing works well with little circulation, but offset printing will be better with larger volumes. On the other hand, with concave or convex forms, you should opt for thermal printing, while screen printing allows you to print business cards with a variety of surfaces and colours.
